Holy Crap! I Killed My Horse!

Sometimes, I’m just really glad this game is still in beta.

I was making my way to Trailer Park from Signal Hill and basically rode my horse over a cliff. Of course, I appeared at the nearest LifeNet facility, but when I had my horse towed, it materialized lying immobile on the ground in front of me.

I couldn’t believe it. I sat there just staring at my screen, stunned. I’d actually managed to kill my horse. For a little while, I really didn’t know what to do. I’m in the outer reaches of Sector One with a dead horse. Even AAA can’t help me now. I actually felt something I’ll describe as a sense of loss, even if not quite in the way we usually think of it.

I Don’t Know If This Qualifies As Stupid…

…but last night, just for the heck of it, I drained almost all of my assets to buy a heavy crossbow and then revisited some of the missions I’d been having problems with.

Interestingly, while I certainly expected to see a bump up in damage from the Light Crossbow I’d been using, I was stunned to see a damage increase of about a third. While still not enough to take out some enemies without at least a little backup, it’s like night and day when dealing with some lesser classes of enemies that used to give me a lot more trouble.

This is exactly the kind of thing I was hoping to discover during beta. Now I know what one of my key priorities will be once the game goes live.

BTW, if you’re going to be at the Apocalypse Party today, I’ll be there, probably checking out each of the sites for a bit. Stop by, say hi, I’d love to meet you!

First Steps

Logging into Fallen Earth for the first time was, well, interesting.

Finding myself at the character creation screen, I found myself a bit disappointed at the lack of options available for character design. As a veteran of Second Life, which probably has the best and most detailed character creation system of any online offering bar none, I’d hoped for more choices from FE. It also seems like the character models available all have one thing in common, no matter how the available options are combined: They all look terminally pissed off.

Now, of course living in a world like the one depicted in Fallen Earth probably wouldn’t do much to raise one’s morale, but even in such a place there has to be more than just one visible emotion. I hope that in time Icarus will refine the FE character creation system and allow players a lot more range in creating a character that fits them and their RP style and personality.

Into The Wasteland

Well, hi.

This is my first post here, so I guess I’d better introduce myself, mmm?

I’m Bekka Jai. If you’ve played Eve in the past and read some of the player blogs about the game, you might recognize the name (even though I spelled the last name “Jae” in that game because I screwed up my original toon with the “Jai” spelling so badly she became unusable). For about 8 months in 2007, I wrote a blog called “Just A Girl And Her Thorax”, which chronicled my adventures in Eve.

I started this post talking about Eve not just to give you an idea about who I am, where I’ve been, and what I’ve done, but also because in large part it’s my experiences in Eve that have led me to Fallen Earth. Many of you right now are probably asking yourselves what a game about a hyper-militarized faraway star cluster has to do with a game about post-apocalyptic earth. The answer, quite frankly, is nothing and at the same time everything.

Interested in Video Blogs?

Just a quick blog to guage any interest there may be from existing or prospective Fallen Earth players in viewing video content on the site? Baltar is considering a few video guides to certain mechanics in game, and this is something we could encourage other bloggers to do to.

Let us know in the comments if you’d be interested in us video blogging, and what you’d like to see video blogged.

A general look at crafting

I wanted to get this post up several days ago, but I’ve found myself tied up doing two things, other than my usual ‘RL’ commitments. One, posting on the Fallen Earth forums, and two, playing Fallen Earth and posting on the forums.

At a very early stage I decided that I did not want to progress much further with the mission content in Midway, my chosen starter town, until I had understood the the trade skills and crafting fully. Therefore I very patiently spent as much time as possible (several hours in the end) visiting trainers, merchants, gathering resources and actually trying my own hand at crafting.

First session in game, part two

Hello again!

I’m going to make part two of the first session recap a lot shorter than I originally intended, as I want to write a separate post covering my thorough investigation into crafting before I get too lost in the actual game for this evenings play session.

So, at the end of part one I’d left the cloning chamber in the crafting orientated starter town of Midway, one of most south/south westerly towns in ‘Sector 1’.

The main chat channel ‘New Player Chat’ was busy, and after having a full 360 degree look at my surroundings, I took a walk into town which was a hundred or so yards ahead of me.
